There are times when we do need to operate in high gear. When I am getting ready for a special event, there are so many details to attend to. It is right that I should work some extra hours to make sure that everything will run smoothly at go time. But, if special events come back to back, it's time to re-evaluate my schedule and see if there isn't someone else who can pick up some of the extra work.
I can work long days and skip my day off for a few weeks, but when I find myself getting overwhelmed, I know it's time to slow down. I must give myself permission to relax and put the details of work and ministry on the shelf for a time.
It is even better to schedule down time into a busy week. Rather than allowing myself to run out of gas, I stop and spend some quiet time with God in the midst of a long day. Then I can resume my work refreshed.
And don't forget to schedule time for your family and friends. Don't say that you'll get to it when the event is over, that sends the wrong message to your loved ones. Instead, make some time before the event to focus your attention on your family for awhile. That will tell them that they are more important to you than the catering or the room set up.
Father God, Help me to keep my schedule balanced. Help me to accomplish the tasks that come with my job and ministry and still keep relationship with family and friends a top priority. Help me to be like Jesus who always had time for people first. I invite You to be my schedule keeper. In Jesus Name, Amen.
